Lithuanian is mainly spoken in Lithuania and Poland. The language is part of the Eastern Baltic language group. It is also considered part of the Indo-European, Balto-Slavic language groups.
Lithuanian speakers are also found in the UK, Germany, Norway, the US, and Russia. Lithuanian has also taken on characteristics of Latvian and Old Prussian. It uses the Latin alphabet and has around 2.9 million speakers.
The written language began around 1547 and underwent a period of stagnation between 1864 and 1904 as the language was banned. This ban was lifted in 1904, and the written language has continued to flourish ever since.
