A population of 95 million uses the đồng. The North first issued it in 1946, followed by the South in 1954. After the reunification of Vietnam, consolidation of the dong took place on May 3, 1978. It has appeared as notes and coins, but coins are no longer accepted, only plasticized notes are in use.
