Spain is a beautiful country with an awesome climate, breath-taking scenery, vibrant nightlife and festivals, excellent cuisine, and very kind and amiable people. It is also a country with many gambling enthusiasts and one of the biggest regulated markets in Europe.
Spain legalized land-based casinos through a royal decree in 1977. Licensing and regulation of wagering venues was done by the relevant authorities in the 17 autonomous regions until the Gaming Act was passed by the Spanish parliament in 2011.
The law legalized online gambling and also paved the way for the creation of the Dirección General de Ordenación Del Juego (DGOJ) to regulate and license operators at the national level. However, the relevant authorities in the 17 self-governing regions are still responsible for overseeing gaming in their jurisdictions.
